Lyrics
Crossing the Bar
(poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson)
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.
Break Free
I've been longing for a show of affection
An honest smile, a crack in the wall
But you've given me nothing to warm my soul with
I cannot take your kindness anymore
Now you say you love me -- it's too late
I've risen to another state
I want someone I can relate to
I only irritate you
You only suffocate me
I guess it's time you set me free
I remember how we used to be together
But now it's gone
There's just nothing to say
I dreamed about you, kept your picture near me
Long after you cut me off and pushed me away
Go!
[instrumental]
I don't know why I let you abuse me
Or why I kept crawling back for more
But it's over now, I'm finally leaving
I'm not quite sure what I hung around for
Now you cannot tie me to your side
This hunger won't be pacified
I want someone I can relate to
I only irritate you
You only suffocate me
I guess it's time you set me
Say you love me -- it's too late
I've risen to another state
I want someone I can relate to
I only irritate you
You only suffocate me
I guess it's time you set me free...
Schrodinger
I rest my head so carefully
On a shoulder, not so far
There is no term for you and me
For what we are
See our eyes below the stars
As the planet turns
Feel the mountain, hear the cars
The L.A. sky burns
Whoa, it's peaceful in limbo
So it seems
You love me, love me not
All inside your head
Until we think what we had thought
The cat's alive, the cat is dead
See our eyes below the sun
Contemplate each universe
All the stillframes of our fun
This last could be the first
Whoa, it's peaceful in limbo
So it seems
I don't know where I'll be
It don't matter much to me
For I know that I'm somewhere
I could be anywhere
And the unknown's been good to me
See our eyes below the moon
As a shooting star sings
Our resolution's coming soon
From the god of small things
Whoa, it's peaceful in limbo
...it's so safe
Running Scared
I get scared
That I might never be lonely again.
I get scared, cuz...
Cuz if it's true I could lose my friend.
Hey my friend, yeah,
My friends, they play in the dirt.
They look down,
They can look down at their shirts.
And they might see their blood, but they know they're not hurt.
Well, we've been running. And I was running.
Now I'm not.
(Hey hey hey)
Well, I've was running. I started thinking that
Maybe that's all I got.
I get tired
Of the kids making noise in the street. (I've been running.)
I get tired.
I get so tired standing here on my feet.
When they see you
Yeah, they got to see you standing tall.
You got to be sure
You can get alone if you fall.
Got to go now, got to save y'all.
Well, I've been running. Hey, I been running,
What you say? What you say
(Hey hey hey)
Hey, I've been running
And it's all that I got, well it's all that I got.
So what you got?
(Hey hey hey)
Come on, now help me out.
Hey! I've been running. Hey, I've been running,
It's alright! It's OK:
(Hey hey hey)
I've been running.
And it's all that I got, well it's all that I got.
I'm not scared
When there's no way to lose.
I'm not scared to walk around here
Without no socks and no shoes.
But I still get scared.
Yeah, I get scared just standing on the ground.
And I get tired.
I get tired from sitting down.
That's all I got for now. See you around.
And I've been running. And I've running.
What you say? What you say:
(Hey hey hey)
I been running.
And that it's all I got, now, it's all I got.
I've been running.
It's alright! It's OK:
(Hey hey hey)
Yeah. And that's all I got, said that's all that I got, now.
And I been running.
Hey, I been running; now I'm not.
Oh, but that's all that I got, ah. Hey, hey, hey, hey.
Oh, what you got now? Ah, run it...
Vulture
I look back, now my mind is clear,
Cuz though it's not all disappeared,
By now it don't hurt so bad.
I now I know what my mistakes were.
And I know it's over.
Now I know I've been had.
I never saw what you were about,
Thought you were just hanging out,
All along, you were betting on us.
Don't want to insult her,
But she's fallen to the vultures.
You prey on what getting from us...
..dumb motherfuckers. Every scam needs a sucker.
Every game needs new blood.
Easy to break when they're hollow, when they're small easy to swallow,
Any act likes to follow a dud.
And anyone on hands and knees makes for an easy step up.
I'm just getting so tired of being someone else's good luck.
I've got a lot to learn
If I don't want to get burned.
But should I follow your trail?
Well, you study every move,
And you think that you've proved
That you just can't fail.
And it all ended so early.
Your opponent wasn't worthy.
Your skills, guess I just can't compete with 'em.
Well, I'll just be on my way.
And you'll keep playing your game.
Someday you might get beaten by some...
..dumb motherfucker. Every scam needs a sucker.
Every game needs new blood.
Easy to break when they're hollow, when they're small easy to swallow,
Any act likes to follow a dud.
And anyone on hands and knees makes for an easy step up.
And I'm just getting so tired of being someone else's good luck.
No no, never wanna be,
Just so tired of being someone else's good luck.
No, never wanna be someone else's good luck.
Just too tired of being someone else's good luck.
Contained
Sometimes I've been thinking
that if I cordoned off my mind
Then I could hold my thoughts inside
Then I could hold my thoughts inside
And if I boarded up my mouth
And then I papered shut my eyes
Then you would only see my lies
Then you would only see my lies
Because I'd hold myself inside
Well if you ask me I'll tell you
That seeing is an art
Best practiced in the dark
Best practiced in the dark
Yeah if you ask me I'll tell you
That living is a farce
Best played without a part
Best played without a heart
That's why I hold myself inside
Eternal Golden Braid
I say
I want to know what you're thinking
You say
That's like hoping that my favorite tune
On a jukebox on the moon
Will have the same buttons
As a Saskatoon saloon
I say
I want to understand
But you say there's no chance of that...
And from billions of these bubbles within bubbles
Are all the beasts and baubles of the world composed.
You say
That "personality" is just human flaws, artfully arranged
I say
That neurons spark in your night-coloured eyes
In stencils of sick, self-doubt, and surprise
Like my favourite constellation
And so I sympathize
You say
I'll get tired of chasing you
But I say there's no chance of that...
Where is Bobby McGee?
Sit down, talk a minute. I know being left is hard to take.
And if you let it get to you, you can make some mistakes.
So don't you say such stupid things. You might be surprised.
Could be giving up more tomorrows than you realize.
Bobby McGee can have his freedom.
Let it go, you don't need 'em.
Yeah, he can have his freedom.
You don't need 'em. Don't need him at all.
You know, I once knew a guy.
I knew he wouldn't harm a fly,
So the rest of the kids, we let him hang with us.
Well, the man was good for the feel-good times,
But he never earned my trust.
Not at all, oh, not at all.
So I say Bobby McGee can have his freedom.
I let it go. We don't need 'em.
Yeah, he can have his freedom.
He can have his freedom if he wants.
All that he wants.
Don't envy a man cuz he says he's unbound.
Be grateful for the people that tie you down.
Why be always on the move if you ain't going nowhere?
And the home he's supposed to find, well, that's so much hot air.
Some people better grab onto something soon
Before they float on off away like some kid letting go of a balloon.
And I say Bobby McGee can have his freedom.
Let it go. I don't need it.
Yeah, he can have his freedom.
He can have his freedom if he wants.
La da la da, Bobby McGee.
I'm young, I got nothing to lose.
I owe nothing to no one except to sing the blues.
Look ahead, I wonder where I'll be.
And where, after all of it, where is Bobby McGee now?
Where did it get you now, Bobby McGee?
La da la da, Bobby McGee.
La da la da, yeah, if he wants.
If he wants. If he wants.
Can have his freedom if he wants.
Yeah...
Out of Time
When the light appears at the edge of the sky
You can see the problem with me.
That is just what someone looking toward his day should see.
I see it now, from the other side; I'm about to go to sleep.
I got nothing done today but I'm thinking maybe sometime next week.
But maybe I'm running out of time.
"Car's packed, now," he says, "No more will fit inside.
"Well, this is what I need, the rest can stay behind.
"I'll probably see you further toward the other end.
"And all the dumb shit we done can all be done again."
But for that kind of thing I'm running out of time.
Once hopped the fence to the pool in the winter when it snowed
Just to see what the place would look like,
I guess now I can say I know.
That's good 'cause there's no snow days now, and I should stay alert
I could use a little more money,
Guess that means I could use a little more work.
The Grinder's Tale
With this hand I've posted blinds 50,000 times,
Then another 50,000 around.
I'll tell you, after a while, don't feel so much
The ups and downs.
Stacks are high, my heart don't beat faster.
Stack's down, I don't pout.
And all the squares sit down.
They think they can draw me out.
They believe that it matters what they do.
But for all their superstitions,
Each card remains 1 in 52.
Hey, can you feel that ebb and flow?
Eventually you find out that even what you believe
Is not the same as what you know.
Sometimes wonder, though I know this is no place you'd visit.
Think maybe soon I'll just run into you.
That's not so bright now, is it?
I do pretty well, wish you could see.
Chips dance all over, but they seem to settle with me.
I believe that there was another track.
But that train's pulled away now, and I got nothing now,
Nothing for to drag it back.
Hey, now I've had my go.
Funny how you can't even see that what you believe
Is not the same as what you know.
Take the hit, but then keep grinding on.
